Spotting fake jobs and scams

The warning signs of a fake advert, and what to do if you see one.

Genuine employers never ask you to pay

No real employer, UN agency or NGO charges money to apply, to be interviewed, for “processing”, training, medical checks or a uniform. If you’re asked to pay, it’s a scam, even if the advert uses a real organisation’s name and logo.

Warning signs

  • A request for money, airtime or mobile-money transfers.
  • A UN agency or big NGO using a Gmail, Yahoo or other personal email address.
  • A very high salary for little experience, or a job offer without an interview.
  • Pressure to decide or pay quickly.
  • Asking for your passport, ID or bank details before you’ve been offered a job in writing.

How to check an advert

  • Find the job on the organisation’s own website or official social media page.
  • Look for the green “Verified employer” tick on JubaJobs: it means the organisation confirmed who they are.
  • Call the organisation’s office using a number from its official website, not the one in the advert.

If you see a fake advert

Tap “Report this advert” on the JubaJobs listing. Adverts that several people report as fake are hidden until a moderator checks them. If you’ve lost money, report it to the police and tell the organisation whose name was used.
